Feedback Is Not Failure

By the end, you will stop hearing feedback as a verdict on you, and start using it as the fastest information you can get.

For a lot of people, feedback lands like a slap. Someone points at the work and something in us hears you are not good enough. So we get defensive, or we deflate, and either way we do not use the one thing that could have made us better.

I marked essays online for years, and I watched two kinds of learner receive the same comment. One read it as an attack and closed the document. The other read it as information and opened it again. Same words. Completely different outcome. The difference was not the feedback. It was what they believed the feedback was about.

Good feedback is not a judgement on your worth. It is information about the work, and about the gap between where the work is now and where it needs to be. The research on formative assessment, from people like John Hattie and Dylan Wiliam, is blunt about this: feedback only helps if it answers three questions. Where am I going, how am I doing, and what do I do next. Feedback that does not lead to a next step is just noise, however kind or harsh it sounds.

So the skill is to filter feedback into a next step, and to keep the work separate from yourself. The work has a gap. You are not the gap.

Feedback is not a verdict on you. It is information about the work, and the work is not you.

Run any piece of feedback through these three questions. If it does not produce a next step, it is not finished feedback yet.

  • 3What is the one next step that closes the gap?
  • 4Remember: the work has a gap, you do not have a flaw. Keep the two separate.

  • Ask for feedback on one specific thing, not everything.
  • Separate the work from your worth before you read it.
  • Turn the feedback into one concrete next step.
  • Make that change before you ask for more feedback.

Ask one person, or one tool, for feedback on one specific thing this week. Then make the single change it points to, and notice it did not cost you anything to hear it.

Callback: Feedback bites hardest when it hits the Confidence kind of hard from Episode 1. Naming that is half the battle.
